FYI Farm Week, Halloween Fun…

During this next two weeks, we plan to do some fun learning via an “Animals on the Farm” theme and we plan to enjoy some Halloween activities, too.

FYI Costume Day…

Tuesday the 30th, each of the kids is invited to wear a simple costume for the morning (no face paint).  The kids can arrive already wearing their costume, they can change into it once they get here, they can wear “costume” style pajamas, or they can skip the costume idea if they don’t want to wear one.

We will change everyone back into their regular clothes around lunchtime.

Grandma Bente has offered to spend the morning with us that day so we can have enough adults for all 9 friends to be here and enjoy the morning and some special activities together.

Thursday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday Activities…

It has been a good few days!  Each of the kids has completed their nursery rhyme book and those have been sent home.  We’ve been having some fun outside, we’ve been reading and singing together, we made two birthday cards, we’ve been talking about alphabet letters ( Aa through Ii), we’ve had some fun investigating the inside and outside of a pumpkin, some fun carving the pumpkin into a “pumpkin puzzle”; and today (Friday) we worked on a pumpkin recipe together!

Nursery Rhyme Books…

Our last page we did for the kids’ nursery rhyme books had to do with Hickory Dickory Dock.  The kids had fun using number stamps and an ink pad, and then noticing how their stamp projects had numbers on them just like we see on clocks.

Pumpkin Puzzle…

We carved a pumpkin on Friday the 19th.  The eyes, the nose, the teeth, the eyebrows and the ears were all shapes like circle, diamond, heart, semi-circle, rectangle, triangle, square, etc. just like the shapes we had been talking about in our nursery rhyme books. During the day on Friday each friend had a chance to play with the pumpkin on their own or with a friend.  The kids took the shapes out of the pumpkin and put them back in their spots again, like puzzle pieces.  The kids liked taking the lid off, too and looking inside the pumpkin.

Backyard & Deck…

On the deck the kids enjoyed having a pumpkin in the sensory table, along with lots of dried corn and with little cups for scooping.

Thursday in the late afternoon everyone went to the backyard and the kids were excited to discover lots of ladybugs on each of the Maple tree trunks!

Friday morning one group of friends had some fun with a jogging challenge in the backyard around 9am while another group had fun with the sensory table.

Pumpkin Predictions and Investigation…

Pumpkin Washing: The kids used lots of fluffy dish soap bubbles to wash our pumpkin the other day.  As the kids washed, we talked about words we could think of that described the outside of our pumpkin.

Pumpkin Tracing: We taped paper to the side of our pumpkin, felt through the paper to feel the ribs of the pumpkin, and then used magic markers to “trace” the lines of the ribs that we could feel through the paper.

Pumpkin Predictions: The kids had a chance to predict what they might find inside a pumpkin, and then they were able to find out for sure.  We put all of the seeds, strands, etc. from the middle of the pumpkin onto a big cookie sheet with two big spoons.  Each of the kids had a chance to have the tray to themselves or to share it with a friend.  The kids got to use their hands – or the spoons – and explore the contents of the tray.

Pumpkin Recipe…

Friday morning, we made a batch of Pumpkin Gingerbread with Grandma Bente.  Each of the kids had turns smelling all the spices, adding at least two ingredients, and had turns stirring the batter with a whisk.  Later the kids got to eat the Pumpkin Gingerbread at snack time.
